T4 Day Four Lesson Improvement extra

From Session 3: 4 on the Innovative Teacher Network recreated as bac

Section A: What's for Lunch?

Getting Started

Examine how the What's for Lunch? lesson you just studied went through such an improvement process.

  1. Open the What's for Lunch? - Revised Lesson handout and the Food Tracker Form.
  2. With the group, review the revised lesson design. Follow your facilitator's guided tour of Part A. Notice (but do not do) the steps in Part B of the Web lesson.

Section B: Reviewing Five Lesson Improvement Questions

To improve the What's for Lunch? lesson, the teacher thought about five questions:

  1. What is an authentic, engaging problem that students might address in doing this lesson?
  2. What are the academic and 21st Century Skills standards that students will work on?
  3. What are the student steps and teacher directions needed to work through the problem situation posed by the lesson?
  4. What are some ways that technology can enhance teaching and learning throughout the lesson?
  5. How will student success be measured against the selected standards?

Now you will have the chance to think about how these questions might have been used to improve the What's for Lunch? lesson.

Section C: Explaining How the Five Lesson Improvement Questions Were Addressed

  1. Open the What's for Lunch? - Lesson Revision Analysis template in Microsoft Word.
  2. Working in a small group for ten minutes, compare the original and revised What's for Lunch? lessons. Try to determine how the five lesson improvement questions were addressed in changing the original into the revised lesson.
  3. As a small group, report your findings to the whole group.
  4. As a whole group, debrief by discussing these questions:
    • How might an increased focus on standards and assessment contribute to improvement of student learning in this lesson?
    • What revisions to the lesson helped make the task more engaging and authentic for students?
    • How did the use of technology enhance this lesson?
    • Would the results of the lesson have been the same without using the Web site? Why or why not?
